Juniper Bank House: 504 Lanark Road

Present owners Russell & Judith Lee.

Juniper Bank (House) on the Lanark Road

The house was built circa 1820, as a single storey cottage. In the late 19th century, the house was extended vertically and a side wing was added. At the turn of the century, two single storey extensions were added to the SW front and the eastern end of the building follwed in the 1950's by a further extension which added a 'Granny Flat'.

The house was been put to a variety of commercial uses; at one time it seems to have been a horse carriage repair facitlity (the large garage bears witness to this) and the SW wing of the house was a bakery up until the early 1900s. The baker's ovens still exist (now behind a utility cupboard wall), and the four loft above which was only accessible via a back door some four metres above the ground level, has been re-purposed as a bedroom. The shop at the front of the house has now been converted to a kitchen.

The previous owners were Gilchrists, who we believe were related to the Kedslie family. The Kedslies' had a long association with the house and the bakery.
